OSWEGO — Uniontown High’s girls can go the distance. Uniontown High’s boys work hard in the field.
Uniontown High’s track teams began the 2011 season Tuesday at the Oswego High Invitational.
Freshman Kelli Wilkinson set a new meet record in winning the girls’ 3200-meter run. She ran the race in 13 minutes, 49 seconds and teammate Rachel Henderson was fourth. The old meet record for the 3200 was 14:42 by Cormeny of Oswego in 2009.
Wilkinson also won the 1600-meter run in 6:34, with Henderson in third place.
Trenton Miller captured gold medals in the boys’ shot put, 39 feet, 5 inches, and the discus, 122’6”. Carter Wood won the boys’ high jump with a clearance of 5’6” and was fourth in the triple jump.
Wood placed sixth in the 800-meter run. Montana Beerbower was fifth in the boys’ 3200-meter run.
Also for the Eagle girls, Amelia Brown claimed the gold medal in the javelin with a throw of 74’10”. Abby Dixon took fourth in the javelin, the shot put and the discus.
Emily Akins finished second in the long jump. She also turned in a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash and ran fourth in the 200 meters.
“This meet is always a great one for us to start the season. We see some good competition and get a good base for our athletes,” said Jackie Hall, UHS head coach. “Our athletes competed well.”
Uniontown goes to Frontenac today.
